Lonely? You're not alone.

Sometimes the hardest part is the first step.

Today, I started in the right direction. Trust me, it is not always that way. I began the morning with an AA zoom meeting, a jog, and a mango-mint avocado drink. I am sitting down to write about self care in the time of corona, but thinking about loneliness keeps distracting me. We are social animals, and physical distancing is excruciatingly hard for many people right now. I notice it, especially in our seniors. I wish I could wave a magic wand and make everyone feel loved.

I find myself asking the question of what causes loneliness. Is it the human condition? Is it something we never cure but manage like a mental illness? I’ve heard it said that you could be lonely in a crowd or in the presence of someone who does not understand just as much as being physically alone. How can we feel connected in times like these? I believe everyone will find his or her antidote to loneliness. My hope is you fill that hole in the soul with something healing. Such as turning towards God, a spiritual practice, music, family, and friends. Remember, if you’re lonely you’re not alone.

I hope you reach out when it feels impossible; I know that I am always surprised to find love and support when I do.

……………………..

Here is a song I wrote a few years back on the subject of loneliness. I thought it seemed fitting to share.

There’s a young girl sitting at a corner café, sipping on a double mocha latte, with a teardrop in her eye

In the fumes from a bus, and the breeze of the morning rush, a man in a blue suit fusses with his watch

Like he’s running out of time…

There’s an old man covered in the daily news, on the sidewalk there, with no shoes, nobody seems to wonder if he’s breathing

Above the horns of the traffic a man on a soapbox screams at the masses, searching for one soul to believe what he’s preaching

Just another day in paradise, concrete souls with broken hearts and hungry eyes

If you’re lonely you’re not alone

If you’re lonely you’re not alone

Were all searching, were all searching, for a home

If you’re lonely you’re not alone

Wrapped up in a crowd of people, staring up at a tall white steeple that points up like a needle into the sky

If the good books true then beyond the blue, there’s a hand reaching down for me and you, that’s the reason why

If you’re lonely you’re not alone

If you’re lonely you’re not alone

Were all searching, were all searching, for a home

If you’re lonely you’re not alone
